BBC Inside Out
Sean McMullen, Managing Director of The Works Staffing Solutions, was praised by the BBC’s Inside Out programme, broadcast on Friday 16 February 2007. The programme, which investigated racism in the recruitment and housing markets, showed that racism is rife but that The Works has risen above it.
Gerard Melling, Producer of the programme, said “The Works is a great example of how a business should tackle racism. It’s a real shame that not everyone follows Sean’s example”.
The BBC programme highlighted how agencies responded when asked for white only staff. Posing as a small business, Inside Out rang several agencies asking for temporary staff, saying “We want non-Asian people. Is that OK?”. On receiving answers such as “Don’t worry. That’s fine…”, they started to worry about the state of the industry. However, Sean stood firm and actively challenged the request, refusing to work with any business under those terms. Inside Out invited Sean to be interviewed as part of the programme.
Sean established The Works Staffing Solutions in 2005 having worked in the industry for many years. He felt that there was a space for a new agency that would provide a more tailored approach to recruitment, ensuring that no corners are cut and that both his clients and workers are treated with the same levels of respect.
The benefits of these more honest working practices have been seen almost instantly as The Works has already become a well know and highly respected and successful agency.
Paul Biggs, from Millbrook Beds, said that “We have used The Works extensively over the last year to recruit both permanent and temporary staff. We recruit employees from diverse backgrounds and ages and we have been delighted with the service the company has provided.”
Sean will be expanding the business across the south coast during 2007 and 08, bringing his own fresh, dynamic approach throughout the area, doing his bit to help ensure the economic growth of the region.
